The Fetească Neagră, Merlot and Pinot Noir cottages feature modern equipped kitchens with full size refrigerators, electric stove and 4 burner range top and dishwasher. Each cottage is fully equipped with dishes and cutlery and high thread count bed linens and towels.
The Fetească Neagră and Merlot cottages each have two bedrooms on the ground floor (one with a double matrimonial bed and one with two single beds) and an attic room with a double bed (and half bathroom) which can also be used as a third bedroom. The Pinot Noir cottage has one master bedroom with a double matrimonial bed on the ground floor and a large open loft area with half bathroom and double bed which can be used as a second bedroom for adults or children (total 2 bedrooms). All of houses are eco certified by the Romanian Green Building Council, meaning they were designed and built to the highest standards of energy efficiency and comfort.
The fixtures, furnishing and fit out are unique in each of the three cottages, being fully designed and mostly custom made in consultation with a leading Romania interior designer.
Guests can relax in the swimming pool and six person in ground Jacuzzi with separate seating area. All guests have access to the comfortable barbecue area for evening meal preparation and dining.
Prepare culinary delights at our outdoor kitchen barbecue area or enjoy long hikes through the surrounding countryside. Located in the heart of Dealu Mare, Jardine Hills can be your “home base” from which to explore the world class wineries and vineyards that dot this delightful region of Romania. We look forward to welcoming you to your special oasis!
Nestled in the heart of the Dealu Mare countryside, our cottages are perfectly located for an ideal weekend break or a leisurely mid-week holiday.
Dealu Mare (the “Big Hills”), is located in the Muntenia area of Romania and has been a renowned wine region for centuries. Indeed, documents referencing the nearby Tohani vineyard date back to 1773.
We are located near the 45° parallel (like the famous Bordeaux vineyards). So, whether you prefer hiking the scenic terrain that surrounds us, an afternoon of wine tasting at one of the many nearby wineries or simply relaxing with a glass of locally produced Jardine Hills wine by the pool (or in the winter, curled up on the sofa in front of the wood burning stove), you are sure to experience a relaxing and memorable stay at Jardine Hills!
Situated about 100km northeast of Bucharest you can reach us by car driving on the A3 highway then take the exit toward DJ100B in the direction of Mizil

Jardine Hills can be found on Google Maps or Waze. We are in Valea Scheilor, just north of Mizil and about 100 km northeast of Bucharest
In 1948, all of the private vineyards and wineries in Romania became the property of the state and their production focus over the next forty years turned to quantity as opposed to quality. Evidence from this period can still be seen in the many terraced hills that surround us, which are now fallow and no longer produce grapes.
After 1990, private investors and vinophiles began to rediscover and explore the potential of this fertile and verdant region, only 100 kilometers northeast of Bucharest and easily accessible by car and train.. Since the mid-2000s, many vineyards in the region have been replanted with EU-standard grape vines and this has translated into a wonderful variety of high quality wines once again being produced from our region.
Americans Bryan and Mimi Jardine first came to Romania from Los Angeles in 1996 and travelled extensively around the beautiful country side over the next several years. However, it was only in late 2003 that they decided to realize their dream of owning their own “home in the country”.
Their wish list was fairly basic—they needed something close and accessible to Bucharest to make weekend stays feasible, accessible by both car and rail if possible, and ideally with some land to accompany the house. In particular, they were both attracted to the famed Romanian wine region of Dealu Mare, situated about 100km northeast of Bucharest, at approximately the same latitude as Bordeaux and home to some of the finest vineyards in Romania.
The home they found in November 2003 was ideal for their needs, nestled in the lovely rolling green hills of Valea Scheilor—about 8 km north of the town of Mizil in the heart of Dealu Mare. The house and region ticked all the boxes—proximity to Bucharest, access to shopping and rail station in Mizil, electricity, indoor plumbing, a well and an international phone line.
The property was actually one house with an incomplete second story and a second smaller adjoining house suitable for a guest cottage together with 2.5 hectares of land, including some older vineyards and fruit trees. After buying the property in February 2004, they began renovation works on the main house in April of that same year.
Over the years, “Jardine Hills” developed into a desirable getaway for family and friends and Bryan and Mimi spent many wonderful days and evenings creating lasting memories there.
Finally, in 2014, they decided to take the next step to develop the venue further and to share the beauty and serenity of this location with others.
Accordingly, ground was broken on the construction of the new Jardine Hills compound in July 2015. The concept was to create three cozy but fully equipped guest cottages in which a couple, family or friends/coworkers could spend a weekend, a whole week or even longer together in their own home. Close to the main house, but with their own privacy, these new cottages would feature all the modern amenities of a modern home, but with the rustic charm of the regional surroundings. The houses would have privacy but also intimacy—sharing a pool and Jacuzzi area as well as outdoor barbecue and entertaining areas.
Our vision was realized when on July 4th 2017 we officially opened the Cottages at Jardine Hills. Now you can enjoy what we have created–the peaceful serenity of the famed Romanian wine region in the comfort of your own home…
